On the Way Down

Chipper chirping in green trees
Sun shines ironically
How many times till we get it right?
Flowers not half bad
Girl in pink winks
Old man driftwood smiles
No teeth left to loose.
Beautiful lawn with occasional chairs
Kids running unencumbered…
An afternoon in Shropshire, Marsailles,
Tepoztlan…no crisis till the cigarettes run out.

It was never meant to be like this
Or any other way…it’s just one picture
In the kaleidoscope. The little victories,
Little defeats don’t amount to much…you’ll
Wake up in your next life as if nothing happened.

Enjoy another cup of tea, your temporary pleasure,
Your hour of leisure on the edge of a cliff,
This diamond on the clock of time,
This nothing before nothing after.
Sip, before the hatchet swings. Last cigarette,
Oh dear, I wonder where the next one is?
…diving to the ground.
