A Recent Memory

I was about six or seven....watching TV. A show was about to come on. It was called "The Big Picture". I thought someone was going to tell me what life was all about. I got very excited. When the show came on, it was about the military...propaganda, really. I became very disappointed. I remember thinking at the time:
"This isn't going to be as easy as I thought."

I experienced something similar, John. When I was about seven or eight, my mother let me stay up late to watch "Monty Pythons Flying Circus" with her. I recall being really excited. Needless to say I was rather confused, and turned to my mother and asked "when does the circus start, mom?" I think she chuckled and then blushed as a naked man sitting in front of a piano flashed on our television. The naked women cutouts in Terry Gilliam's animations caught my eye.

I outgrew circuses, but I still love Monty Python... but not SPAM.

Yeah. Another incident from TV...which I think affected my whole generation...was when Clarabell the Clown from Howdy Doody (who never spoke), on the final show, just before the credits, looked at the camera and said "Bye bye, kids." I think we all discovered what death was at that moment.
