Practicing Enlightenment
That’s what we’re doing when we sit in
Buddhist meditation.
When we sit simply in an upright posture
without distraction, as Suzuki Roshi said,
that in itself is enlightenment.
We don’t see it because our minds are
full of confusion, but, over time as we sit,
confusion clarifies to the point where our minds
are no different in essence to the crystal ball
that sits on the shrine.
Like morning clouds hiding a mountain, as the
sun shines the clouds evaporate and the mountain
is revealed.
As we meditate, the sun of awareness shines on
our cloudy minds, the clouds of confusion dissipate,
and the mountain of enlightened mind is revealed.
For the I Ching,
clouds are not a thing.
