Letting Go

We have to let go of many things in life,
including life itself.
Our children grow, we have to let go
so they can be themselves.
Our parents die, we can’t hang on,
no matter how much we want them there.
Lovers, spouses, friendships all are subject
to the fact.
Even success has its time limit.

But the hardest thing to let go of
is our ego
because we cherish our thoughts about
ourselves more than anything, who we
think we are.
We cherish our egos, try to maintain.
If we feel good or bad about ourselves,
it’s ego just the same.
We’re used to it, why would we want
to change?
We have an ego problem.
It’s really the only problem we have.
It does no good, gets in the way from
just seeing things clearly.
If we saw things clearly,
 we wouldn’t have a problem.
Even death wouldn’t be a bother.
You can’t imagine that because
your ego longs to be eternal.
No matter what you think,
you have to let go, or get driven
into insanity by thoughts that
won’t go.
You don’t need rocket science
to get to freedom,
just a willingness to see,
and let go of what is not there.
