If It Wasn't For The Drugs And Alcohol (Sept. 23)

If it wasn't for the drugs and alcohol,
I wouldn't have been able to stand
being a plumber.

If it wasn't for the drugs and alcohol,
I wouldn't have been driven to Buddhism.

If it wasn't for the drugs and alcohol,
I never would have written a single word.

If it wasn't for the drugs and alcohol,
I might have been a normal dad, and
my daughter would still ignore me.

If it wasn't for the drugs and alcohol,
I might have become like everyone else....
lost in a sober, pedestrian view of the world,
waking each morning intact for the next
cog to grind me into lifeless atoms.

I never drank when I was working in theatre. It was too all
consuming, ergo, no need to drink. I only lost maybe half a day of plumbing due to hangover. When I taught Shambhala, there
were a couple of times I went overboard. I'm always drunk when I write...that's a lie, but, that's all I can remember.
