Johnny Handgun
Johnny Handgun was a private detective who
didn’t telegraph his moves. Johnny H. is how
he introduced himself. If they asked him what
the H stood for, he’d say, “Handsome, handshake,
handgesture, hankering, you know…”. Handgun
was his real name. His father, Colt, had been in
the army as a side arm. That was a joke Johnny
liked to tell. Things went on from there. Day
changed to night, suspicion to revelation, love to
enlightenment. Nobody knew where we were going,
but we all knew we were on our way. Johnny took
on a few clients as long as they didn’t ask too many
questions. He got cash, half in advance. One look at
Johnny, and they all knew he could do what they
needed. There were some things, though, that Johnny
wouldn’t do. Simple, clean, and moral was Johnny’s
way. Justified could also be a term to use. Corpses
never seemed to be able to come to their own defense.
That wasn’t Johnny’s fault.
