A Thousand Glass Eyes
A thousand glass eyes were staring
Hands limp at the sides
As the Leader pulled the lever
No one cried.
A thousand glass eyes were staring
At the incoming tide
Standing in place
Mouths shut tight and dry.
A thousand glass eyes were staring
Away from the sun
Looking at the light
In the glint from a gun.
A thousand glass eyes were staring
At the flag that was still there
The wind had no will to unfurl it
In dawn’s rabid red glare.
